Food Insecurity Education

Food Insecurity & Starvation is a real everyday challenge for millions of Low-Income residents.

Prevalence

• Approximately 1 in 4 residents in Los Angeles County faces food insecurity, indicating that over 2 million people lack consistent access to sufficient food.

Impact on Children

• Families with young children are particularly vulnerable. Recent data indicates that 56% of parents with young children experience food insecurity, highlighting the severe challenges faced by these households.

Racial Disparities

• Food insecurity disproportionately affects certain racial and ethnic groups. Latino and African American communities experience higher rates of food insecurity compared to their White counterparts, reflecting systemic inequalities in access to resources.

Economic Factors

• The high cost of living in Los Angeles County, including housing and transportation expenses, contributes significantly to food insecurity. Many working families, even those with multiple incomes, struggle to afford nutritious food due to these financial pressures.

Nutrition Insecurity

• Beyond food insecurity, nutrition insecurity is a growing concern. In 2022, 25% of Angelenos were nutrition insecure, lacking access to healthy foods that meet personal and cultural preferences. This issue is particularly pronounced among Asian populations in the county.

Health Implications

• Food insecurity is linked to various health issues, including higher rates of diabetes and poor mental health. Individuals facing food insecurity are more likely to report chronic health conditions, highlighting the intersection between nutrition and overall well-being.
